When you look deeper.

I'm always fascinated by the little tidbits that come out from historical events. Today I was reading a big article in the Washington Post about "Deep Throat". One of the tidbits implied that perhaps Mr Felt was not the patriot that so many have made him out to be. Seems he was mightily disappointed at having been passed over for the number 1 FBI spot after J Edgar Hoover. It may be his leaks weren't so much about bringing down corruption as they were about getting back at the administration that left him in the number 2 spot.

I was also fascinated by an article that quoted Woodward or Bernstein (I forget which) as being dismayed at the reverence to which Deep Throat is held. Seems he really only provided vague hints and confirmed things they had already found out elsewhere. He wasn't a fabulous source for them. They put a lot of hard work into pulling clues together from everywhere, he just provided the backup that convinced their publisher to go with their info.
